Backstory to Philippians

The city of Philippi was located in northern Greece

The last major battle of the Roman civil war was fought on the plains outside of Philippi. As a result, Caesar Augustus settled some of his veterans there and bestowed on the city the honor of being a Roman colony. Philippi was very proud of this heritage and had strong loyalty to Rome and the Roman emperor. This Roman pride and loyalty is reflected at points in Paul's letter to the Philippians.
