Backstory to Titus

Paul wrote the letter of Titus from Nicopolis (or perhaps while he traveled there) sometime around 63-65 A.D. The letter is addressed to Paul’s long-time colleague in ministry, Titus. Crete is a large island in the central Mediterranean Sea and an important stopover for those traveling by sea. Nicopolis is about 460 miles north on the west coast of Greece.

Paul had spend some time on Crete at the harbor pictured below during his sea voyage to Rome for his first imprisonment there, and then after his release he returned with Titus to plant churches on the island.
Interestingly, Titus himself only appears in Paul’s letters and is never mentioned in the book of Acts. Yet from Paul’s letters it’s clear Paul led him to faith in Christ very early on in his ministry and Titus was traveling with Paul from at least 50 A.D. and on.
