Key Facts
- Although there is debate among modern scholars, most likely 1 Timothy was written by Paul to Timothy in the city of Ephesus sometime after he was released from house arrest at the end of Acts.
- c. 64-65
- Paul was released from incarceration in Rome and continued ministry. At some point he returned to Ephesus and left Timothy there as he continue to visit his churches.
- Paul wrote from Macedonia to Timothy in Ephesus to guide Timothy on how to address false teaching and the issues in the church it’s causing.
- 1 Timothy is usually categorized as one of the “pastoral epistles” because Paul is giving pastoral advice to Timothy.
